Researchers from Murdoch Children’s Research Institute have received a $100,000 donation from The Gillin Boys Foundation to support research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).

On Thursday 11 May, Drs Peter Houweling and Chantal Coles visited The Gillin Boys Foundation and its community of supporters in Warrnambool to share their latest research findings and thank the local community for their support.

Dr Houweling and Dr Coles from the Muscle Research Group study muscle diseases like DMD, a rare debilitating disease caused by the wasting of the skeletal muscles.

The researchers were presented with a cheque for $100,000 – the largest donation made by the Gillin Boys Foundation to date – to go towards important DMD research at the Institute.

The $100,000 donation is currently the largest gift given by The Gillin Boys Foundation – bringing their total donations to the Institute to $150,000.

“The more funds we raise, the quicker the cure,” said The Gillin Boys Co-founder Chris Gillin.

“When my late brother Aaron and I decided to start raising money to find a cure for Muscular Dystrophy, we knew it wouldn’t help us.”

“We also lost our cousins Ben and Zach to the disease and wanted part of our legacy to be helping give other families like ours a fighting chance to be treated for the disease, or better yet cured.”
