Researcher selected for dynamic leadership program

Murdoch Children's Research Institute's Dr Claire von Mollendorf has been selected for a dynamic program that supports women wanting to progress or extend into leadership positions within the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) industry.

Dr von Mollendorf was one of 34 mid-career emerging leaders chosen for the veski inspiring women 2020 STEM sidebyside program. 

Applicants were chosen based on their passion for diversity in STEM, wanting to directly impact cultural change within their organisations / institutions, seeking to further develop their leadership skills and wanting to build confidence to take the next step in their career.

Dr von Mollendorf, a medical epidemiologist currently working as a senior research officer in MCRI'S New Vaccines and Asia-Pacific Research Groups, said the program would help her achieve career goals and also inspire other women in the process.
 
"I am excited to be chosen to participate in this program and to meet other women in diverse fields of STEM. I am hoping that the program will grow my leadership skills, allow me to be more strategic in my networking, and give me the confidence to take up new opportunities," she said.

Dr von Mollendorf predominantly manages surveillance programs in Mongolia but also provides support for other group projects in the Asia-Pacific region. 

Prior to this she worked in different research areas, including women's health, HIV and pneumococcal research in South Africa. Her passion and involvement in research has spanned over an 18 year period and has included adults and children, some vulnerable groups and ranged from clinical trials to observational studies.

The 2020 STEM sidebyside program offers workshops, masterclasses and networking opportunities, access to qualified facilitators and panellists and networking with key stakeholders across academia, industry, government and not-for-profits.

The program is led by veski with the support of the British Consulate General Melbourne.
